What is Early Neurological Stimulation (ENS)?

ENS is a set of five simple, gentle exercises performed once daily on puppies from the 3rd to the 16th day of life. This is a small window when the puppy’s neurological development is accelerating rapidly.

The program originated with the U.S. Military’s canine development research to improve the performance of working dogs. The theory is that gently stimulating the puppies' undeveloped neurological systems triggers hormonal and adrenal responses that improve their overall health and resistance later in life.

The 5 Exercises of ENS

Each exercise is performed for just 3–5 seconds:

1. Tactile Stimulation: Touching the puppy between the toes with a cotton swab.

2. Head Held Erect: Holding the puppy perpendicular to the ground, head pointing up.

3. Head Pointed Down: Holding the puppy perpendicular to the ground, head pointing down.

4. Supine Position: Gently holding the puppy on its back in the palm of the hand.

5. Thermal Stimulation: Placing the puppy on a cool, damp towel.
